Alcohol may reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a crippling disease. In RA the body becomes it's own worst enemy as the immune system attacks healthy tissue such as the joints. I have seen a good number of patients with this problem and it somtimes isn't pretty. There is pain, inflammation and degeneration of tissues. There is management with anti-inflammatories but there is no cure.

It can be so bad as to drive someone to drink, and according to one recent study that might even be a good thing!

Yes, researchers have found that drinking alcohol can potentially reduce the risk of developing RA. The study was done in Scandinavia (I hear they drink a lot over there--you know those long, dark winters and all) and included 2750 subjects.

The subjects were quizzed on their lifestyles including behaviors like drinking and smoking. They were also given blood tests to look for genetic markers like those that manifest as RA.

The results showed that the more alcohol consumed the lower the risk for developing RA. The researchers don't know just why that is but there appears to be a strong relationship.

No, smoking did not decrease the risk, just drinking, so put that pack o smokes away.

So, I am not condoning going out on a bender or conducting your own research as to additional benefits of alcohol consumption but perhaps this needs some looking into.

Cheers...
