I know I am not the only one with this idea. Many of us alternative medicine types have been touting the healing effects of nutrients for a very long time and hey, how about giving vitamins to the one population of people who really need to heal, that is, those poor souls in hospitals.
The few times I have been unfortunate enough to spend my time in the sterile palace I noticed that there was nary a vitamin in site. Drugs yes, vitamins no.
Yes the food is getting better, except for perusing the heart healthy section and finding a hamburger (but it was a lean one). And I know it took awhile for those dietitians to accept that vitamins might be good for you.
Nutrients heal. Our bodies consist of molecules that are run by other molecules that undergo many many biochemical reactions. And what are these molecules made of? Mostly the stuff that goes in our mouths. And what helps those life-sustaining reactions along--vitamins.
So you can understand my interest in an article I found stating that improving the nutritional status of patients in intensive care can help improve their clinic status (meaning they heal better).
The researchers used food containing antioxidants to help reduce the oxide stress (from free radicals). HIgh levels of oxide stress have been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. No, they didn't go as far as to actually give patients antioxidant supplements but they did use foods containing vitamins A, C, E and minerals.
They concluded that yes indeed, antioxidants can help to reduce oxide stress and improve clinical outcomes (healing).
I'm glad they are catching on....
